Avenger earthworm
LZ Avenger was out of reach of Artillery fire support so it had to be cleared and neutralized of enemy activity by aerial ordinance. We found this dead earthworm about 1"diameter and 8-10 ft. long. A grunt from Bravo Co. which initially secured and occupied and built the place after the LZ prep said he'd never seen spiders as big anywhere else before and it was no fun walking down off of it. Our mortar group, being trained in infantry, faced the prospect of joining them "Waltzing through Pinkville" in the valley below but it never happened. Instead we were flown off to a one-day affair somewhere in the bush further down south at LZ?, as we never knew the name of the place. We had to leave and leave all the ammo there with the line company. I heard their Old Man was not to pleased with that responsibility. From some of the photos the seacoast was still visible to the east so we weren't that far inland. We basically were around and available but weren't firing that much of the ammo they sent there with us and then got flown back to San Juan Hill. This is all in the next section, there's one more photo here.
F.O.-ing at Avenger
This is looking east toward the seacoast. At night we saw the Battleship USS New Jersey firing and it lit up the whole quadrant of the horizon with a bright ORANGE color, but no sound. It was Awesome!
